Another mark-making exercise from Lorraine Glessner.
Gather Materials:
- an artist’s journal, unlined notebook, or piece of paper
- pencil, pencil
crayons, markers or charcoal stick, a timer- glue
- a grocery list or other found writing from the recycling bin
Today’s Exercise
- Glue the grocery list to the page of your journal. You may wish to orient it upside down or sideways to help trick your brain into seeing marks not of words. Tip: allow the glue to dry well before beginning.
- Sit comfortably with your pencils laid out in front of you
- Set a timer for 5 minutes
- Until the timer goes off respond to the marks on the page varying your mark making and your pencil selection.
- Make a dashed line, a
dotted line,
swoosh,
swirl,
spiral,
circle,
square,
triangle
fill in some shapes

Reflections on the Exercise
- It would have been better if I had let the glue dry. As it was, it was difficult to draw over the wet list. I added this tip to the exercise.
- I could have gone longer than 5 minutes
